The Elephant Whisperer: My Life with the Herd in the African Wild by Lawrence Anthony

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A deep understanding of the elephant world

This account by Lawrence Anthony is a wonderful record of the re-introduction of elephants to the Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, South Africa, after an absence of 100 years. His hours and days of patient observation of these traumatised animals, who had been delivered into his care, result in a rare and deep mutual understanding, which eventually allows their integration into the reserve as an independent wild herd.

He also talks of his tireless work to engage local tribes-people in the ambitious Royal Zulu Conservation Project, which will potentially bring education, jobs, new skills and greater wealth to the area. Sadly he died before this dream was realised but his wife has continued his work and has written a sequel which I am looking forward to reading.
